Whisky Collab Project

The first board was a concept mood board which was to blend the shapes and forms of the two companies. This was done by picking a colour pallet and various aspects of the two companies products - specifically looking at the textures and basic forms.

The mood board was then used to form the basis of the 2D and 3D development. All ideas were conceptualised via sketches and then further developed using ADOBE Illustrator to best portray the colour and material choices for my product.

Once the final concept was developed by doing many 3D models of the product, I turned those products into 3D CAD Models then translated them into 3D plan drawings in AUTOCAD for producing the final products. From these drawings a part and material list was drawn up to help me plan the process to make the parts / final product.

Here is a final 'Hero Image' of my final products, which was to fully show off what my product offers. This image was designed to fit into a magazine, so thought about how text could be added around the image was taken into consideration.

Smart Terrarium

At The University of Dundee, there was always an emphasis on the term "social Digital". Thus we were often encouraged to use technology to aid in the social and the positive environmental impact of the products we designed. To the Left shows a final render of a product created by myself and another 4 people in a design challenge, where we were to make a product that ran as an automated system based on arduino. the Product we came up with was a smart terrarium, where the user could view all of the environmental data going on inside the sealed glass unit via a display on the side.

The Arduino and a breadboard with some of the sensors added. This project utilized a Temperature gauge, a Moisture Sensor, a Dust sensor and a humidity sensor.

All of these sensor values were displayed on screen. The values when correct (neither too hot or cold for example) but would go to red if the value was off. Thus allowing the user to know if the plant was in optimal growing conditions.

After making the product prototype we decided that the next itteration of the design could allow you to use a database saved intot he product that would allow you to select different plant species to allow you to get various growing environments for various plants. Our final product was taken by the University Of Dundee Computing Research Facility to aid them in the smart agriculture research project they are undertaking.

Forming Sound

In this Project "Forming Sounds" we were challenged to make a smart speaker concept that was designed to assist a specific customer base. My concept was to create a speaker that was to help architecture students with their busy schedules and also help them to remain healthy and active whilst working the long hours needed to create their projects. 

To best carry out this project I first started by analysing the life of architecture students by interviewing a few students from Dundee University Architecture Department. I also did an environmental research intot he available desk space that architecture students had when working, this was to allow me to think how best to shape and form the speaker to not take up too much valuable desk space.

We were then challenged by the lecture to come up with 100+ concept drawings for our speaker. This was done in a low fidelity, sketch-like way to best get our Ideas down onto paper as quick as possible.

After selecting a few of the drawings I began to form card models to see which shapes and forms I liked the best.

After Building a few cardboard forms I went to the Architecture department and asked the students which design elements they liked and disliked. I then made notes of improvements and began the development of the card model that best suited their needs - this page best shows this progress.

This is a fully rendered CAD model of the concept speaker. It shows the final shape and form, the materials and components involved in the build. This render was shown to the Architecture students and was ultimately approved by my research group.

Air Purifier

Design can come in many forms of inspiration. In this design challenge we were to get influences from two different sources. I chose 50s Automotive Styling and Industrialisation. With this information we were to design an Air Purifier.

Once taking basic shapes and forms from our influential images from out dual design movement boards we started the basis for design development of our air purifiers. The basic development I like to follow is, influential shapes, then build those shapes into practical product designs. Once I have a few practical products I will take elements of the best formed products I have already established and re-establish them into more functional products that better fit the design brief.

When I have a few practical products designed from my product iteration boards, I will start to do more refined render drawings and CAD renders to see how the product can be formed (and eventually manufactured). When designing in 3d CAD it is very easy to see how components will interact, and to see if the design I have come up with is actually possible to mass-produce. When Designing in 3d CAD it is also possible to see if the user may have any issues when using the product, such as the complexity of operation, or how it will be used by less able users, such as people with physical restrictions.
